Bikini Atoll is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is in the Marshall Islands, which are in the Pacific Ocean. The United States did 23 nuclear tests on the island between 1946 and 1958. These tests had about 7,000 times the power of the Hiroshima bomb. This had big effects on the island’s environment and on the health of the people who were exposed to the radiation. Some people got very sick from the radiation. The biggest risk comes from eating locally grown foods like breadfruit, coconut, papaya, and limes that have been tainted. It’s also very dangerous to have pigs, chickens, or ducks raised on the island. Not only is the nuclear power plant on Bikini Atoll island dangerous, but the island is also known for having dangerous sharks. Before you dive into the waters of Bikini Atoll, give it some thought.

Gruinard Island is in Gruinard Bay, halfway between Gairloch and Ullapool. It is thought to be the wildest and least populated part of Great Britain. After the British government did tests with the anthrax bacterium on the small, oval-shaped island, it became risky. Biological warfare tests were done there during World War II, which polluted the island and killed many people. Gruinard Island was cleaned up in the 1980s, but no one has lived there since, and anthrax spores are still in the soil.

But a long time ago, people lived on the Farallon Islands, too, not just seabirds and sharks. Between 1946 and 1970, the U.S. Geological Survey says that about 48,000 drums of low-level radioactive waste were put in the water around the islands. No one was allowed to go to the Farallon anymore; only a few protection scientists were able to get in. It’s still not clear where the trash cans are right now and what kind of damage they might be doing to the earth.
