A 68-year-old man from California has been cured of both HIV and blood cancer, according to doctors.
68-year-old Californian Paul Edmonds has won a fight against two very strong diseases: acute myelogenous leukaemia (AML) and HIV. This is an unbelievable medical event. Edmonds is now free of both illnesses thanks to a new and unique treatment. This is a big step forward in medical history.
Edmonds had a stem cell transplant (also called an allogeneic hematopoietic cell transfer) five years ago as a way to treat his AML. In this process, healthy blood-forming stem cells from a donor are infused into the patient’s system. It is often seen as the last option for people with blood cancer.1 These donor cells had a genetic change that made them resistant to HIV, which turned out to be a surprising benefit in Edmonds’ case.
Being diagnosed with AML added another (not very necessary) layer to Edmonds’ medical story. He had already been living with HIV for more than 30 years. The stem cell transfer, on the other hand, not only cured his leukaemia, but it also gave him a new way to fight HIV. The change in the donating cells made them immune to HIV, which got rid of the virus completely in Edmonds’ body.
