This week, a group of kids pushed Kathy Johnson’s 2-year-old grandson out of his kiddie pool in Spokane Valley’s wildlife-rich Painted Hills neighborhood. Tuesday afternoon, when the temperature was in the 80s, a bull moose snuck into the Johnsons’ backyard and jumped into their inflatable pool to cool off. Johnson said, “It’s not one of those little pools.” “It’s actually quite big, except when there’s a moose in it,” she said.
“Funny thing is, a cow moose did the same thing last week,” she added as if the moose in the valley were getting the word that Johnson’s pool was a great place to cool off in the summer. Johnson said, “The cow spent a long time in the pool and then got up and nibbled around the yard.” “The bull didn’t stay as long, and when he got out of the pool, he moved on.” Johnson was most surprised that the moose’s hooves, which weigh more than 500 pounds, didn’t damage the plastic pool.
