Demi uses she/her pronouns instead of they/them because she was “tired” of explaining them.
Not long after Demi Lovato came out as nonbinary in 2021, she said that she only used they/them names. It’s normal for gender identities to change over time. In 2022, Lovato switched back to using the terms she and her, but she still identified with they and them. Right now, their Instagram bio says “they/them/she/her.” Now Lovato is talking about why she made that choice, saying it had more to do with other people and how tired she was of teaching others over and over again to accept someone’s gender identity.
In a June 13 GQ Spain interview, Lovato talked about how their pronouns changed over time. She said that she started to identify with she/her pronouns again after getting tired of people misusing and misgendering them. “I had to teach people all the time and explain why I used those pronouns.” People translated the interview and said that Lovato said, “It was so tiring.” “I was just worn out.” I know it’s important to keep sharing the word, though, because of that.
In 2021, the singer became the first famous figure to use they/them pronouns. They/them will be my official names from now on because I identify as non-binary,” Lovato wrote at the time in an Instagram post. After a year, Lovato changed their pronouns to she/her. “I feel more feminine, so I’ve changed my pronouns to she/her again,” she said in an interview in August 2022.
After going over her names again in the GQ Spain interview, Lovato talked about how she constantly feels like she doesn’t fit in as a nonbinary person living in a binary world. “Every day I deal with this. As an example, in public bathrooms. “Having to use the bathroom for women, even though I don’t fully identify with it,” Lovato said.
“It can also happen when you have to fill out forms, like government forms or any other form where you have to say your gender,” she said. “There are only two choices: male or female, and I don’t understand any of that.” Because there aren’t any more, I feel like I have to pick a woman. This needs to change, in my opinion. We hope that there will be more choices in the future.
