These are the world’s ten worst airlines.

You’ve been warned.

There are times when airlines are so bad that it’s scary: hard seats, old and expensive food, no entertainment, delays and cancellations, and staff who don’t care. If you’ve been through this, you know that you’ll never want to go through it again, no matter how tempting the food is.

To protect travellers from having a bad flight experience, Bounce, a luggage storage company, looked at seven factors: customer complaints, on-time arrivals, the maximum amount of free luggage allowed, comfort, meals, in-flight entertainment, and staff service. Delta was a winner. It was the best domestic airline, and Hawaiian Airlines and Horizon Air were the next two best. All Nippon Airways and Singapore Airlines are the best foreign airlines because their customers are happy and they get complaints less often.

But do you know which companies are really struggling? Here is a list of the world’s worst airlines, ranked by how badly they did on the above factors. You now know what not to book!

Viva Air Colombia

The low-cost airline in Colombia got an average score of 3.4 out of 10, making it the worst airline in the world. According to Bounce, it moves 22.55 million people a year and runs 40,000 flights a year. It had one of the fewest complaints, but it got only one star out of five for staff service, food, seat comfort, and entertainment. Ouch!

2 OF 10

VivaAerobus

VivaAerobus is another low-cost airline. It is a Mexican company that has been around for 14 years. It goes to a lot of places in the U.S. and other countries, like Chicago, Los Angeles, and Miami. The results showed that meals, seat comfort, and in-flight entertainment were the most important factors. All of them got a 1, and staff service got a 2. People on board have to pay for their own food and drinks, so no one can win.

3 OF 10

Volaris

The third-worst airline in the world is also a cheap Mexican airline. It only lets you bring 10 kg of luggage at a time, and between January and June 2021, 379 people complained about it. The study found that it will likely make money in 2021, but “because the airline stopped offering in-flight entertainment in 2019, it has one of the lowest scores in our index.” This very low-cost airline gets a score of 4 out of 10 for its general airline index.

4 OF 10

Ryanair

Ryanair, an Irish low-cost airline, is a little better off at 4.2, but it is still the fourth-worst airline in the world. Ryanair doesn’t offer any entertainment during the flight, and this is by far their worst mistake: they don’t let you bring free luggage. Read about their bag rules here.

5 OF 10

Interjet

Although Interjet has more complaints than Volaris, it gets better marks for food and seat comfort. It is also in the top 10. The airline with a lot of debt hasn’t run any flights since December 2020, but it plans to start up again in 2022 with 10 Airbus 320. The company has been in a lot of news lately because one of its owners, Alejandro del Valle, was arrested and then released. The company is also facing bankruptcy.

6 OF 10

Vueling Airlines

The Spanish low-cost airline Vueling got a 5 out of 10 overall because it didn’t do a good job with live entertainment on board. It’s interesting that the European carrier got third place for being on time in another study of flights based on punctuality. Vueling will get you to your destination on time if you don’t mind not watching the new Spider-Man movie in the air (though the company is soon adding Wi-Fi to all of its trips).

7 OF 10

EasyJet

Like Ryanair, EasyJet’s flaw is that you can’t bring free bags with you. The UK-based airline got few complaints and did well on most measures except for in-flight entertainment. However, the fact that customers can’t check their bags for free has hurt its scores.

These two airlines are the only ones on the list that don’t have a 0 next to their Maximum Baggage Allowance (kg) group. Air Europa, Air Canada, Qantas, and La Compagnie are the four airlines that have the highest allowances, with 32 kgs each.

8 OF 10

Ukraine International Airlines

International Airlines of Ukraine

The main airline of Ukraine got a total score of 5.3. It gets a 1 for in-flight fun and a 3 for good customer service. In the six months, there were only 33 reports.

9 OF 10

TAP

The most concerns are about TAP Air Portugal, which is owned by the government and is the country’s main airline. It would have been in the top 10 if customer complaints hadn’t brought it down so badly. It got threes and twos in most categories.

10 OF 10

Gol Airlines

There were only 16 complaints about the Brazilian low-cost airline, which is one of the fewest. The staff service and seat comfort both got three out of five stars. It made it into the top 10 worst airlines in the world because it didn’t have any entertainment on board, which got it a score of 1 out of 5.
