The Amazing Tale of a Brazilian Couple’s Reforestation Project: From Barren Wasteland to Thriving Ecosystem

 

For the past 20 years, a Brazilian couple has been converting a desolate ranch into an opulent haven for wildlife. Renowned photographer Sebastião Salgado and his spouse Lélia Deluiz Wanick Salgado purchased the property in 1994 and were horrified by the destruction brought about by commercial farming and deforestation.

The pair was determined to bring about a change, so they set out to replant the area with native varieties of vegetation and trees. Their efforts have paid off over time. With the planting of more than 2 million trees and the reintroduction of thousands of animals, the formerly desolate terrain is now brimming with life.

In addition to aiding in the restoration of the local environment, the couple’s project, Instituto Terra, has improved the climate because the regenerated forest serves as a carbon sink. Furthermore, the reforestation has given local communities employment opportunities and served as a model for sustainable development.

Sebastião was awarded the Right Livelihood Award in 2019 and the renowned Prince of Asturias Award in 1998, respectively, demonstrating the international prominence that the Salgados’ work has earned.
